The first prototype was built in 1967. Up until 1970, about 40 cars were built with the name Velar, so that competitors would not guess anything ahead of time. Structurally, it resembled American SUVs of the time.
When you first see this car up close, your first thought will be "how big it is!" In the first 2 years it was almost impossible to buy it due to the huge demand, speculators "warmed their hands" on this excitement.
The first cars of the first generation had 3 doors. This design is much stronger than a five-door car, which allowed the Range Rover to be a very reliable and safe car. Disc brakes were initially installed on it. They wanted to make not a permanent all-wheel drive, but a plug-in one, but the torque from the powerful engine of the American company Buick is too high and the rear axle could not withstand it.
The suspension is long-travel on shock absorbers and cylindrical springs. It allowed for large transverse vibrations, which provided both high cross-country ability and comfort when driving on the highway.
The gearbox was originally four-speed, the transfer case - with a normal and low gear ratio. At first, a friction clutch was installed on the center differential, but then they began to make a forced lock. Until 1973, the steering was without a booster. In 16.6 seconds, it accelerated to 100 km / h, which corresponded to modern passenger cars at that time. The maximum speed is 155 km / h and the weight is 1724 kg.
At first, it was a rather simple and utilitarian SUV - there was no air conditioning, rich trim, automatic transmission. They even made fire trucks and ambulances out of them. The first person to redesign the concept and design of the car was the Swiss Peter Monteverdi. He slightly reduced the ground clearance, installed alloy wheels, trimmed the interior with leather and installed a large Chrysler engine with a volume of 5.2 liters and a capacity of 152 hp under the hood instead of the Buick engine. There was also a more charged modification - a 7.2 liter engine with a capacity of 300 hp. This model was called Monteverdi Safari.
In 1980, the company tried to conquer the American market. First, they improved the engine, installing electronic fuel injection instead of carburetors. This reduced fuel consumption and met the environmental limits of American law. Then designers worked on the car.
In 1987, the Range Rover officially appeared in American dealerships. Standard equipment included air conditioning, a four-speed automatic, cruise control, an electric sunroof, and other new features at the time.
In 1992, the most important modification of the car was the air suspension. Now the car can be accelerated to high speeds without sacrificing cross-country ability. When driving on asphalt, the suspension reduced the car's ground clearance, as if pressing against the asphalt, and when driving off-road, the ground clearance increased.
There were 4 generations of Range Rovers in total:
- I - from 1970 to 1996
- II - from 1994 to 2002
- III - from 2002 to 2012
- IV - since 2012
The closest competitors are the following cars from other automakers: Audi Q7, BMW X6, Chevrolet Tahoe, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lexus GX, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Porsche Cayenne and Toyota Land Cruiser.
