Inspection and verification
1. Check the customer's complaint.
2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical problems.
Visual check
Mechanical elements:
- Drive belt condition (cracking / damage / contamination)
- Intermediate pulley assembly
- Generator
- Engine cooling fan
- Tensioner assembly
- Engine cooling pump
- Power steering pump
- Air conditioning compressor (A/C)
- Vibration damper
- Drive belt
3. If an obvious cause of the problem you identified or described by the client is found, eliminate it before proceeding to further actions (if possible).
CAUTION: If the engine is operated without an accessory drive belt to prevent activation of certain components, DTCs may be generated (DTC), which should be required before returning the car to the owner. The engine should not run with the belts removed for more than 2-3 minutes. Failure to do so may result in vehicle damage.
4. Use an approved diagnostic system or scan tool (tester), to retrieve all DTCs before referring to the Symptom Table or DTC Index (DTC).
- Clear all DTCs after troubleshooting.
Symptom table (accessory drive belt)
sign | Possible reason | Operation |
Noise | Check belt condition (see visual inspection). Check tensioner operation. Check pulley alignment. Check actuated elements for increased resistance to rotation. Repair if necessary. | |
Drive belt not holding tension | Check belt condition (see visual inspection). Check tensioner operation. Repair if necessary. |
See section 100-00 for a complete list of DTCs that can be logged in the vehicle. For more information, see: How to use this manual (100-00 General information, Description and principle of operation).
