Review
The generator is located in the front RH (right) engine parts. The Denso alternator has an output current of 85/150 A. An eight-ribbed V-ribbed belt is used to drive the alternator from the crankshaft pulley.
The alternator pulley has a freewheel that reduces the reduced moment of inertia of the engine during deceleration. The main components of the generator are the stator, rotor, rectifier and voltage regulator.
The generator is connected to «weight» through attachment points.
The excitation winding is located on the generator rotor. The iron core has protrusions on both sides, which form the north and south poles when current flows through the field winding. The rotor is located inside the stator, and the rotor shaft is mounted on bearings, which ensure its smooth rotation and take on significant lateral loads created by the drive belt tension.
The stator has three windings of copper wire. Three stator windings made of copper wire are connected «star» at a common point. The output current generated by the rotation of the rotor is transmitted to the electrical system from the free ends of the three windings. The rotation of the rotor creates an AC current in the coils (alternating current).
Operating principle
The rectifier converts the AC current generated in the stator windings into DC current (D.C) (transformed), which is required for the electrical system of the car. The rectifier is a semiconductor diode mounted on a heat sink. The positive and negative arms of the rectifier contain an equal number of diodes. Another diode in the regulator is responsible for the feedback maintained through the battery voltage signal circuit. The rectifier also prevents the battery from discharging through the alternator when the alternator voltage is lower than the battery voltage.
The regulator is used to control the output power of the generator and ensure optimal battery charging. The voltage setting is determined by the regulator itself based on internal measurements compared with the set charging characteristic. The regulator has two connections to the ECM (engine control module); the former provides power to energize the generator at startup, and the latter is a diagnostic channel used by the ECM to determine if the generator is healthy. Fault diagnosis is used to turn on the charging indicator on the instrument panel via the CAN connection (data transfer protocol) between the ECM and the instrument panel. The ECM logs all faults related to the generator. They can be read as DTC (diagnostic trouble code) using a Land Rover approved diagnostic system.
