Using a jack (Defender 2007+)

General information

WARNING: When lifting a vehicle, the following instructions must be followed.

• The car must be parked on a level and solid surface.
• Apply the parking brake.
• Select the "P" (PARK) position on the automatic transmission selector lever or 1st gear on a manual transmission and high range, "H", on the transfer case.
• Select low range in the transfer case.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to components located under the vehicle, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the following procedure for jacking the vehicle.

DO NOT PLACE JACKS OR SUPPORTS UNDER THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS.

• Body
• Bumpers
• Fuel lines
• Brake lines
• Front trailing arms
• Diagonal reaction bar (panhard bar)
• Steering drive
• Rear trailing arms
• Fuel tank
• Oil pan crankcase
• Gearbox housing

Car jack

The jack supplied with the vehicle is intended for emergency use only to change a flat tire. DO NOT use this jack for any other purpose. Jack installation locations and procedure are provided in the vehicle Owner's Manual.

WARNING: Do not perform any work on a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Hydraulic jack

Only hydraulic jacks with a minimum lifting capacity of 1500 kg should be used.

Warnings:
Do not begin work under the vehicle unless reliable supports are installed in the designated areas.
When lifting the car, place wheel chocks under the wheels. Do not rely on the parking brake, as it becomes useless once the rear axle wheels are lifted off.

Lifting the front of the car

• Position the hydraulic lever head under the differential housing.

NOTE: The differential housing is not centered in the axle. Use caution when lifting the front wheels as the rear axle has less roll rigidity.

• Raise the front wheels to allow space for the left axle tube to be supported.
• Place a support under the right axle tube, carefully lower the jack, ensuring that the axle is securely lowered onto both supports, and remove the trolley jack.
• Before starting work on the bottom of the vehicle, check again that the vehicle is securely supported on the supports.
• To remove the vehicle from the supports, perform the above steps in reverse order.

Lifting the rear of the car

• Position the hydraulic lever head under the differential housing.
• Raise the vehicle to allow support for the left and right axle tubes.
• Lower the jack so that the bridge sits securely on the supports. Remove the trolley jack.
• Before starting work on the bottom of the vehicle, check again that the vehicle is securely supported on the supports.
• To remove the vehicle from the supports, perform the above steps in reverse order.
