Rear cardan shaft (Range Rover 3)

Dismantling

1. Place the vehicle on a lift.

2. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

3. Remove the exhaust system.

EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND DUCT SYSTEM: V-8 Engine, REPAIR WORK, Exhaust system and suspension components.

EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND EXHAUST SYSTEM: Td6 engine, REPAIR WORK, Exhaust system and suspension of system components.

4. For petrol models only: Remove the 5 nuts securing the left heat shield. Remove the heat shield.



5. Remove the 8 nuts securing the center heat shield and remove the shield.



6. Remove the 8 hex head screws securing the fuel tank heat shield and remove the shield.



7. Raise the vehicle so that the driveshaft can turn.



8. Apply mounting marks to the driveshaft to facilitate subsequent assembly.

9. Remove the 6 nuts and bolts securing the propeller shaft to the final drive tail flange.

10. Separate the universal joint from the final drive tail flange and support the propeller shaft.

CAUTION: To avoid damaging the boot or the hinge, do not allow the drive shaft to hang from the hinge.

11. Remove the 6 Torx screws securing the driveshaft to the transfer case flange.

12. Separate the universal joint from the transfer case flange and support the propeller shaft.



13. Unscrew the 2 intermediate support mounting nuts and remove the propeller shaft.

Assembly

1. Install the cardan shaft, tighten the intermediate support mounting nuts, but do not tighten them completely at this stage.

2. Clean the cardan shaft joints and the flanges that mate with them.

3. Align the cardan shaft joints with the flanges so that the mounting marks match. Tighten the Torx screws securing the cardan shaft to the transfer case flange to 85 N·m, and the nuts securing the cardan shaft to the final drive tail flange to 70 N·m.

4. Tighten the intermediate support mounting nuts to a tightening torque of 21 N·m.

Before tightening the screws, check that the intermediate support is not under stress.

5. Install the fuel tank heat shield and tighten its mounting screws.

6. Install the central heat shield and tighten its mounting nuts.

7. For gasoline models only: Install the left heat shield and tighten its mounting nuts.

8. Reinstall the exhaust system.

9. Lower the lift.

10. Connect the negative terminal to the battery.
