Wheel bearing and wheel hub rear suspension (Defender 2007+)

Removal

1.

WARNING: Ensure that the vehicle is supported securely. Raise the rear of the vehicle.

2. Remove the rear wheel.

3. Remove the 2 bolts securing the brake caliper to the hub.

4. Separate the caliper from the disc and tie it to the side.

• 1. Remove the bolt securing the rear brake pipe valve to the differential housing.
• 2. Release both rear brake pipes from the rear axle mounting clamps.

5. Remove the 5 axle shaft mounting bolts.

6. Remove the axle shaft and discard the gasket.

7. Knock off the caulking and, using a suitable socket head, loosen and discard the nut.

8. Remove the hub nut washer.

9. Remove the hub assembly with the brake disc and bearings.



10. Remove the outer bearing and spacer from the hub.



11. Remove the seal and inner bearing from the hub.

12. Remove the inner and outer bearing rings from the hub.

Installation

1. Clean the hub and bearing areas.

2. Install the inner and outer bearing rings onto the hub.

3. Pack the inner bearing with grease and install it on the hub.

4. Install the new seal flush with the rear surface of the hub using tools LRT-54-003 and LRT-99-003.



5. Clean the axle shaft spline.

6. Pack the outer bearing with grease and install the spacer and bearing onto the hub.

7. Install the hub assembly onto the axle shaft and remove LRT-54-019.

8. Install the washer and new hub and tighten the nut to 30 Nm.

9. Rotate and push/pull the hub until the bearings are firmly seated. Tighten the hub nut to 210 Nm.



10. To check the hub end play, install a dial indicator using the LRT-99-503 bracket into the outer hub bolt hole.

11. Place the dial indicator on the contact surface of the hub nut.

12. Move the hub in and out, taking readings from the indicator.

13. If there is axial clearance, refer to the table for the correct spacer if necessary and replace the spacer.

14. When there is no axial clearance, remove the dial indicator and support bracket.

15. Secure the hub nut with a cotter pin.

16. Clean the hub and axle shaft surfaces.

17. Install a new outer hub gasket.

18. Install the outer hub onto the hub and tighten the new bolts to 65 Nm.

19. Install the original adjusting shim(s) onto the axle shaft and secure with the snap ring.

20. Install the caliper on the hub, screw in the bolts and tighten to 82 Nm.

21. Connect the rear brake pipes to the rear axle.

• 1. Install the rear brake pipe valve mounting bolt to the differential housing and tighten it to 15 Nm (11 foot pounds)
• 2. Secure both rear brake pipes using the rear axle mounting clamps.

22. Install the wheel, remove the supports from under the car and tighten the wheel nuts to 130 Nm.



23. Depress the brake pedal to position the brake pads before starting to move the vehicle.

24. Check and top up the brake fluid.
