Adjusting the Transfer Case High/Low Range Selector Rod (Defender 2007+)

Lockout Device, High/Low Range Selector 308-711

NOTE: When performing this procedure after replacing the transfer case high/low range selector linkage, perform steps 13 - 19.


1. Remove the floor console.

For more information, please refer to the chapter: Floor Console (501-12 Instrument panel and console, Removal and installation).

2. Re-lay the left carpet.

3. Remove the parking brake lever protective boot. Remove the 3 clips.

4. Release the parking brake lever.


  • 1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  • 2. Remove two bolts.

5. Remove the mat from the gearbox cover panel.

NOTE: Do not remove the protective cover from the switch knobs.

WARNING: The gearshift lever handle releases suddenly, so turn away when removing. Failure to do so may result in injury.




Release the gear shift knob. Release the two clamps.

WARNING: The high/low range selector lever handle is released abruptly, so turn away when removing it. Failure to do so may result in injury.


Remove the protective cover and dismantle the selector levers. Disconnect the high/low range selector lever.

9. Remove the gearbox cover panel. Remove 11 screws.

NOTE: To reduce the insulation tension, set the differential lock mechanism to the left position.

12. Disconnect the transfer case high/low range shift rod. Press the button to release the transfer case high/low range shift rod.

WARNING: Never work on a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle with special stands.




Raise and support the vehicle.

NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the vehicle's wheels to ensure that high range is fully engaged.


Make sure the transfer case is in full high range.

16. Using the special tool, set the transfer case high/low range selector lever to the high range position. Install the special tool.

NOTE: Make sure the transfer case high/low range shift rod makes full contact with the ball joint and not with the foam pad.


Connect the transfer case high/low range shift rod.

18. Push the locking block inward. Ensure that the locking block is securely engaged.

19. Remove the special tool.

20. Install the insulation pad support bracket.

Install the insulating gasket.

22. Install the gearbox cover panel. Screw in the screws.

23. Install the protective cover together with the supplied selector levers.
  • Install the selector levers.
  • Secure the protective cover completely.

24. Place the mat on the gearbox cover panel.

25. Install the parking brake lever. Tighten (tightening torque 25 Nm).

26. Install the parking brake lever protective boot. Install the clamps.



27. Re-lay the left carpet.
