Operating principle

Inspection and verification
CAUTION: Diagnostics by substituting a component from another vehicle is NOT permitted. Substituting control modules does not guarantee confirmation of the fault and, in addition, may cause additional faults in the vehicle being tested and/or in the vehicle from which the modules are removed.
NOTE: Certain transmission problems also apply to the engine, transmission, wheel bearings, tires, and other components of the vehicle. For this reason, make sure the transmission is the cause of the problem before adjusting, repairing, or installing any new components.
1. Visually inspect the system for integrity and obvious signs of damage.
2. If an obvious cause for the problem you identified or the customer described is found, correct it (if possible) before moving on to further action.
3. If the cause is not visually obvious, check the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart or check for DTCs and refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
