Table of signs of malfunction (Freelander 2)

Sign of malfunction	Possible reason	Action
Constant noise level over a narrow range of vehicle speeds. Typically heard in light driving conditions or when coasting	Rear drive axle	For more information, please go to PINPOINT TEST A.
The noise is the same when driving with the gear engaged and when coasting	Road noise The driveshaft joint is worn or damaged Intermediate support of the cardan shaft Wheel bearing Normal conditions (road noise)	Check and install new components if necessary. Loud clunking noise in transmission when shifting from reverse to forward	Gearbox calibration Transmission support Transmission Suspension elements Transmission side clearance The idle speed is set too high Engine support	Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, reconfigure the transmission control module (TCM) using the latest available calibration version Check and install new transmission mounts if necessary For transmission diagnostics. Check and install new suspension components if necessary Check and install new transmission components if necessary Check and adjust idle speed if necessary Check and install new engine mounts if necessary
Clicking, cracking or grinding noises	Insufficient or contaminated lubrication of the front/rear axle CV joints The other element contacts the front/rear axle shaft Wheel bearings, brake or suspension components	Inspect, clean and lubricate with new grease if necessary Make sure that no other components are in contact with the front/rear axle shaft Check and install new elements if necessary
Vibration at high speeds	Wheel(s) or tire(s) imbalance Skewed/unbalanced driveshaft The intermediate support of the propeller shaft touches the support point of the body	Balance and install new wheel(s) or tire(s) if necessary.
