Review
The Drive and Handling Optimization feature includes a Terrain Response System that links a number of modules throughout the vehicle to provide the best combination of settings across systems.
For a detailed description of the design and operation of the system, see section 204-06 - "Motion and handling optimization function" in the workshop manual.
Inspection and verification
1. Make sure the customer's complaint is justified.
2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical and electrical problems.
Mechanical factors | Electrical Factors |
3. If an obvious cause of a problem that you identified or described by the customer is found, resolve it before proceeding to the next steps (if possible).
4. Use an approved diagnostic system or scan tool (tester), to retrieve all DTCs before referring to the symptom table or DTC index (DTC). Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual.
Symptom table
Since the overall performance of the system depends on the subsystems, it is possible to mistakenly perceive the indication in the message center as a message about a malfunction of the terrain response system, when in fact the messages are the result of a malfunction in one of the subsystems.
When you are investigating faults in a terrain response system and when the fault is likely in a subsystem, refer to the table below for help in making a decision.
Symptom | Description | Possible reasons | Action |
Message center indication indicating subsystem failure | The message center shows the driver that a malfunction has occurred and indicates in which subsystem | Any malfunction in the subsystem is supported by the message center | For a list of available messages, refer to the appropriate section in the workshop manual. Perform a complete read of vehicle DTCs and follow the indicated diagnostic program (programs). |
Message center display: No special programs for system faults, normal terrain response system switch operation | This message will be shown when a subsystem malfunction occurs, if the driver tries to change a special program, and on each ignition cycle for 5 seconds until the malfunction is corrected | Any malfunction in the subsystem is supported by the message center | For a list of available messages, refer to the appropriate section in the workshop manual. Perform a complete read of vehicle DTCs and follow the indicated diagnostic program (programs). |
Message center display: Special programs for system failures are not present, LEDs in the terrain response system switch are not working | This combination of messages will be displayed when there is a fault in the terrain response system module or switch, if the driver attempts to change a special program, and on each ignition cycle for 5 seconds until the fault is corrected | Check for DTCs (refer to the Index given below). Follow the specified diagnostic program.
Message center display: No special programs for system faults, ALL LEDs in the terrain response switch are lit | Errors in the CAN electrical circuit | Perform a complete read of vehicle DTCs and follow the indicated diagnostic program (programs).
Changes to special programs are not provided | User error | Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual. Make sure the driver is familiar with the correct operation of the system. |
