General information
The Terrain Response™ system allows the driver to select a program that provides the right traction and vehicle dynamics for the given road conditions. This system does not turn off. By default, the work program without special programs is 'special programs off'. It is suitable for all normal road conditions. There are four special programs for driving on any type of terrain.
The system is controlled by a rotary switch mounted on the center console behind the selector lever (for vehicles with automatic transmission) or gear lever (for vehicles with manual transmission). You can select one of five programs using the rotary switch:
- Special programs off (special programs disabled)
- Grass/Gravel/Snow (program "Grass/gravel/snow")
- Mud/Ruts (program "mud/ruts")
- Sand (program "Sand")
- Rock crawl (program "Slow movement on a rocky surface").
The rotary switch can be rotated 360 degrees or more in either direction to select programs in sequence. If the vehicle has a system "Terrain Response", it also mounts a high-level instrument panel that provides the selected program on the message center display.
System "Terrain Response" coordinates the work of several subsystems to ensure the performance of the vehicle corresponding to the selected surface. System "Terrain Response" consists of the following subsystems:
- Engine management system
- Automatic transmission (in the presence of)
- Transfer case (center differential)
- Rear differential (electronically controlled)
- Brake system (ABS/DSC/ETC/HDC functions)
- Air suspension.
The Terrain Response control unit is located under the rotary switch. The control unit determines the position of the rotary switch and transmits the corresponding signal via the high-speed CAN bus, which is received by the control modules of each of the subsystems. Each of these control modules runs software that selects the appropriate operating parameters in the controlled system, taking into account the selected Terrain Response mode. In addition, each control module provides feedback on the selected program so that the Terrain Response system control unit receives confirmation that all systems have selected the appropriate operating parameters.
Information is transmitted to the driver as a message on the message center display, which is located on the instrument panel. The report explains what changes to operating parameters can be made to optimize the vehicle's dynamic performance based on driving conditions. The Terrain Response system's automatic assistance and information on the display will be especially useful to the driver who does not have off-road experience. An experienced driver can choose special programs for extreme conditions, allowing you to control the operation of vehicle systems (e.g. throttle, gearshift or traction control parameters), which is not possible on vehicles not equipped with Terrain Response.
