The combined crankshaft pulley and torsional vibration damper provide drive to the engine auxiliary units via a 6-rib poly V-belt. The drive belt is located on the unit pulleys, full contact is maintained by an automatic tensioner and an intermediate pulley.
Automatic tensioner
The automatic tensioner consists of a deflecting pulley mounted on a spring-loaded pivot arm. The tensioner is located on the longest side of the drive belt between the crankshaft pulley and the power steering pump pulley. The preload on the drive belt created by the automatic tensioner provides the traction force necessary to drive the accessories without causing the belt to slip.
The automatic tensioner is also used to remove and install the drive belt.
Intermediate pulley
The idler pulley is located under the alternator pulley, next to the automatic tensioner. The idler pulley deflects the drive belt, increasing the wrap angle of the alternator and power steering pump pulleys.
