Power steering pump (Defender 2007+)

Removal


1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

For more information, refer to the chapter: Disconnecting and connecting the battery (414-01 Battery, Battery Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

2. Remove the cooling fan.

For more information, refer to the chapter: Cooling Fan (303-03 Engine Cooling - Diesel Engine ID4 2.4L, Removal and Installation).

3. Loosen the accessory drive belt tension.

  • Turn the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise.

WARNING: Never work on a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle with special stands.


Raise the vehicle and place supports underneath it.

Warnings:
  • Make sure the area around the part is clean and free of foreign particles.
  • Plug all openings. Use new caps.
  • If power steering fluid gets on the paintwork, the contaminated area should be washed immediately with cold water.

Disconnect the power steering high pressure line fitting.
  • Remove the sealing ring and dispose of it.

6. Remove 2 power steering pump bolts.

7. Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir mount.
  • Unscrew 2 nuts.

Unscrew 2 nuts.


8. Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir supply hose.
  • Release the clamp.

Release the clamp.


9. Remove the power steering pump.
  • Remove the bolt.

Remove the bolt.





Installation


1. Install the power steering pump.
  • Tighten to 23 Nm.

Tighten to 23 Nm.


2.
CAUTION: There should be at least 15 mm clearance between the power steering pump pulley and the hose at the rear of the pulley. Adjust the hose position if necessary.


Connect the power steering fluid reservoir feed hose.
  • Secure the clamp.
  • Check for proper clearance between the power steering pump pulley and the hose.

3. Secure the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Tighten to 4 Nm.

Tighten to 4 Nm.


4. Tighten to 23 Nm.

5.
NOTE: Remove and discard plugs.




NOTE: Install the O-ring.


Connect the power steering high pressure line nipple.
  • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lbs/ft).

Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lbs/ft).


6. Secure the accessory drive belt.
  • Turn the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise.

7. Install the cooling fan.

For more information, refer to the chapter: Cooling Fan (303-03 Engine Cooling - Diesel Engine ID4 2.4L, Removal and Installation).

8. Connect the ground cable to the battery. For more information, refer to the chapter: Connecting the Battery (414-01 Battery, Battery Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

9. Add power steering fluid and bleed air from the system.
