A tubular steel crossmember is integrated into the instrument panel. The energy absorbing unit is bolted to the crossmember on the driver's side. The energy absorbing unit consists of 2 calculated-deformable brackets welded to the crossmember. NAS vehicles are also equipped with one energy absorbing bracket, which is bolted to the crossmember on the passenger side.
In the center of the crossmember is a cast magnesium alloy structure that provides support and mounting points for the center console. The driver's side crossmember houses the steering column support, also made of magnesium alloy. The crossmember also serves as a support point for the dual-stage passenger airbag.
For additional information, refer to the chapter: Supplemental Restraint System of Air Bags and Seat Belt Tensioners (SRS) (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, Description and Operation).
The instrument panel consists of 2 plastic castings (upper and lower) welded together to form a single unit. The instrument panel provides mounting points for various driver and passenger interfaces. In addition, the instrument panel provides air distribution ducts, deflectors and flaps. For more information, see the chapter: Air Distribution and Purification (412-01 Climate Control, Description and Operating Principle).
