Replacing the rear crankshaft oil seal (Range Rover 3)

Before disconnecting the battery, make sure that all precautions specified for this procedure have been followed.

Removal


1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Drain the oil from the engine.

3. Remove the torque converter drive disc.

4. Unscrew the 6 bolts and remove the seal housing. Discard the gasket.

CAUTION: When removing and installing the oil seal housing, be careful not to damage the oil pan gasket.


5. Remove the seal from the housing and dispose of it.

Installation


1. Wipe the seal housing and mating surfaces.

2. Remove the protective shell from the new oil seal and install it on the housing, using the…


2. Remove the protective shell from the new oil seal and install it on the housing, using the LRT-12-179 and LRT-12-180 mandrels, as shown in the figure. Reinstall the protective shell on the oil seal.



3. Install the new oil seal housing gasket onto the cylinder block so that it rests on the guide pins.

4. Install the oil seal housing on the guide pins, tighten the M6 bolts and tighten them to a torque of 10 N·m, tighten the M8 bolts and tighten them to a torque of 22 N·m, remove the protective shell from the oil seal.

5. Install the torque converter drive disc.

6. Insert a new lubrication system filter element and fill the engine with oil.

7. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
