Cylinder head gasket (Range Rover 3)

Before disconnecting the battery, make sure that all precautions specified for this procedure have been followed.

GENERAL INFORMATION, Precautions when working with electrical equipment.

Removal

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.

COOLING SYSTEM: Td6, ADJUSTMENTS AND MAINTENANCE, Draining the coolant, flushing the system and filling.

3. Remove the EGR heat exchanger.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS - Td6, REPAIR WORK, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler.

4. Remove the hydraulic lifters.

ENGINE TD6, REPAIR WORK, Hydraulic compensators.

5. Disconnect the connector from the fuel pressure sensor.

6. Disconnect the connectors from the glow plugs.

7. Disconnect the connector from the coolant temperature sensor.

8. Remove the three bolts and move the coolant pipe away from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket.

9. Loosen the nuts and disconnect the fuel pipes from the fuel rail and fuel pump. Assemble the fuel pipe support bushings.

CAUTION: To prevent contamination, install plugs on open connectors.

10. Unscrew 3 bolts and remove the fuel rail.

11. Remove the 2 bolts securing the heat shield and EGR system pipe to the exhaust manifold.

12. Remove the heat shield.

13. Remove the EGR pipe with the clamp.

14. Unscrew the two bolts securing the rigging eye and remove the eye.

15. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the expansion tank hose from the water supply pipe.

16. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the water supply pipe.

17. Unscrew the clamp, disconnect the water pipe from the thermostat housing and move it to the side.

18. Remove the 3 bolts securing the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold. Discard the gasket.

19. Loosen the bolt securing the vacuum hose support clamp and wiring harness to the cylinder head.

20. Remove the camshaft drive chain from the sprockets.

21. Remove and discard the timing chain tensioner clips.

22. Remove the chain guides. Access to the guide from the intake side will be better with the cylinder head removed.

23. Unscrew the 7 bolts securing the cylinder head to the timing cover.

24. In the sequence shown, unscrew and dispose of the 14 cylinder head mounting bolts.

25. Install the lifting eyes on the cylinder head and secure them to it.

26. Attach lifting chains to the eyes, lift the head off the guide pins and remove it from the engine. Care must be taken not to damage the protruding glow plugs.

27. Determine the thickness of the gasket by the number of notches in it. Remove and dispose of the gasket.

Installation

1. Clean the cylinder head, cylinder block, pins and pin holes. If necessary, remove any remaining sealant with a hardwood scraper. Make sure that no sealant remains in the oil or water passages or in the threaded seats.

2. Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, check the deformation of the lower plane of the head in the directions shown in the figure.

3. If the curvature of the lower plane exceeds the maximum permissible value, the cylinder head must be replaced. Milling of the lower plane of the head is not allowed.

4. The new gasket should have the same thickness. (number of cuts) same as the previous one, unless new pistons and connecting rods were installed. If new pistons and connecting rods were installed, then to select a new gasket by thickness, it is necessary to measure the piston protrusion.

5. After making sure that the sealant strips on the gasket are not damaged, install the gasket onto the cylinder block.

6. Lightly lubricate the new cylinder head bolts with engine oil.

7. Carefully place the cylinder head on the block so that the pins enter the sockets.

8. Insert the new head bolts and tighten them in the specified sequence to a torque of 80 N·m. Loosen all bolts by half a turn and retighten them. Tightening torque is 50 N·m. Using an angle torque wrench, tighten all bolts in the specified sequence by 90° and then another 90°.

9. Tighten the cylinder head to timing cover bolts. Tightening torque 20 Nm.

10. Wipe the timing chain guides.

11. Position the chain guides so that the guide on the intake side fits onto the lower clamp and tighten both new upper clamps. Tightening torque is 20 N·m.

12. Wipe the camshaft sprockets.

13. Place the camshaft drive chain onto the sprockets.

14. Wipe the turbocharger and the mating surface on the exhaust manifold.

15. Install the turbocharger on a new gasket and tighten its mounting bolts. Tightening torque 50 Nm.

16. Install the vacuum hose and wiring harness support clamps and tighten the bolt. Tightening torque is 10 N·m.

17. Wipe the engine cooling system pipes and mating surfaces.

18. Connect the engine cooling system pipe to the thermostat housing and secure it with a clamp.

19. Screw in the engine cooling system pipe mounting bolts and tighten them. Tightening torque 10 Nm.

20. Connect the hose to the expansion tank and secure it with a clamp.

21. Install the lifting eye and tighten the bolts. Tightening torque 25 Nm.

22. Wipe the exhaust gas recirculation pipe and the counter-landing surface.

23. Install the EGR pipe, heat shield, screw in the Torx bolts, but do not tighten yet. The bolts are tightened after installing the EGR heat exchanger. Tightening torque is 25 N·m.

24. Wipe the cooling system hose and the mating surface.

25. Place the coolant hose on the new gasket and tighten the bolts. Tightening torque 8 Nm.

26. Install the fuel rail in place and tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening torque 24 N·m.

27. Install the high-pressure fuel pipes and support sleeve, tighten the nuts on the pipes. Tightening torque 20 N·m.

28. Connect the connector to the coolant temperature sensor.

29. Place the connectors on the glow plugs.

30. Connect the connector to the fuel pressure sensor.

31. Reinstall the pushers.
