Upper timing belt cover (Range Rover 3)

The described sequence of operations covers work with the upper timing drive covers of both the right and left heads.

Dismantling


1. Remove the cylinder head valve cover.

V8 Engine, ENGINE OVERHAUL, Valve Cover Gasket.


2. Remove the valve timing control solenoid valve.

3. Loosen the camshaft position sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor. Discard the sealing…


3. Loosen the camshaft position sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor. Discard the sealing ring.

4. Unscrew the bolt securing the afterburner hose to the right cylinder head.


4. Unscrew the bolt securing the afterburner hose to the right cylinder head.

5. Unscrew the bolt securing the afterburner hose to the left cylinder head.


5. Unscrew the bolt securing the afterburner hose to the left cylinder head.



6. Unscrew the bolt securing the clamp that holds the afterburner hose from the cooling system pump.


6. Unscrew the bolt securing the clamp that holds the afterburner hose from the cooling system pump.

7. Remove the afterburner hoses from the cylinder heads and set them aside, discard the O-rings.

Disassembly


1. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the RFG…


1. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the RFG electromagnetic valve seal cover and remove the seal.

2. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Remove the chain tensioner from the timing cover…


2. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Remove the chain tensioner from the timing cover and discard the sealing washer.



3. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Separate the hydraulic part of the tensioner and let the oil drain.

4. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the engine harness…


4. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the engine harness bracket on the upper front timing cover of the right cylinder head and remove the bracket.

5. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the two brackets on the upper front timing belt cover and remove…


5. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the two brackets on the upper front timing belt cover and remove the brackets.

6. Unscrew the 6 bolts securing the timing belt cover to the cylinder head and remove the cover.


6. Unscrew the 6 bolts securing the timing belt cover to the cylinder head and remove the cover.



7. Discard the timing cover gasket.

NOTE: If disassembly was performed only to provide access to other system components, no further disassembly operations should be performed.


8. Loosen the camshaft position sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor.

9. Discard the sealing ring.

Examination


1. Wipe the camshaft position sensor and mating surfaces.

Assembly


1. Install a new O-ring onto the camshaft position sensor.

2. Install the camshaft position sensor, screw in the bolt and tighten it to a torque of 10 Nm.

3. Wipe the timing cover and mating surface, pins and pin seats.

4. Loosen the camshaft position sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor.

5. Apply STC 50550 sealant to the areas shown in the figure.

6. Insert the lower bolt into the right timing cover and install the cover onto the cylinder head.

NOTE: It will not be possible to insert the lower bolt into the right timing cover after installing the left one.


7. Install the remaining 5 bolts and hand tighten all 6 upper timing belt cover mounting bolts.

8. Place the LRT-12-225/2 tool on the valve cover of the left cylinder head.


8. Place the LRT-12-225/2 tool on the valve cover of the left cylinder head.

9. Install the valve cover with the mandrel, screw in the 4 bolts and tighten them to a torque of…


9. Install the valve cover with the mandrel, screw in the 4 bolts and tighten them to a torque of 10 N·m.

10. Tighten the timing belt cover mounting bolts to 15 Nm.

11. Install 2 brackets on the timing belt cover, screw in the bolts and tighten them.

12. Unscrew the 4 valve cover mounting bolts, remove the valve cover with the LRT-12-225/2 mandrel.



13. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Install a new sealing washer, install the chain tensioner and tighten the chain tensioner mounting plug to a torque of 40 N·m.

14. Right cylinder head timing drive upper cover. Wipe the right cylinder head VCC solenoid valve and mating surfaces.

15. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Lubricate the inner mating surface of the VCC valve seal.

16. Upper timing cover of the right cylinder head. Install the solenoid valve seal, screw in the bolts and tighten them.

Assembly


1. Install 2 new O-rings on the afterburner hose and place the hose on the engine. Install the 3 afterburner hose mounting bolts and tighten them to 10 Nm.

2. Install the left camshaft timing solenoid valve.

3. Install the left cylinder head valve cover.

V8 Engine, ENGINE OVERHAUL, Valve Cover Gasket.
