The windshield wiper linkage consists of a main tube with pivoting assemblies at each end. The windshield wiper motor is mounted centrally on the main tube and acts directly on a pair of link rods. The rods convert the rotary motion of the motor into a linear, reciprocating motion.
The rods are connected to the main pipe by cranks at each end. The cranks convert the linear, reciprocating motion of the rods into the rotary, reciprocating motion of the pivots. This causes the windshield wipers to move back and forth across the windshield.
