The coolant level is monitored by an integral float type sensor located in the expansion tank. The coolant level sensor is connected to the CJB. On vehicles equipped with a "low series" instrument cluster, if the coolant level falls below the level of the sensor, the low engine coolant level warning lamp illuminates.
On vehicles equipped with a "high series" instrument cluster, a low coolant level message is displayed in the message center. For more information, refer to the chapter:
- Instrument cluster (413-01 Instrument cluster, Description and operating principle)
- Information and Message Center (413-08 Information and Message Center, Description and Operating Principle)
The tank is sealed with a threaded cap and serves to fill the system during maintenance. A safety valve is built into the tank cap, which protects the cooling system from excess pressure.
