Coolant pump and thermostat (Freelander 1)

Dismantling


1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the valve cover with gasket.

ENGINE - Td4, Inlet and outlet camshafts, Valve cover gasket.


3. Drain the coolant from the engine.

COOLING SYSTEM: Td4 engine, ADJUSTMENTS, Draining coolant, flushing the system and filling.


4. Remove the right front wheel.

5. Remove the accessory drive belt.

ENGINE STARTING AND BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM, REPAIR WORK, Attachment drive belt - Td4 engine.


6. Remove the lower engine mount cross member.

ENGINE - Td4, Inlet and outlet camshafts, Lower engine mount cross member.


7. Remove the hydraulic support.

ENGINE - Td4, Inlet and outlet camshafts, Right engine hydraulic support.


ENGINE - Td4, Inlet and outlet camshafts, Right engine hydraulic support.


8. Loosen the 2 clamps securing the hose to the cooling system pipe and to the thermostat housing.

9. Loosen and remove the hose.

10. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the expansion tank hose from the cooling system distribution pipe.

11. Loosen the clamps and remove the hose from the turbocharger outlet pipe.

12. Unscrew the bolts securing the cooling system pipe to the exhaust manifold.

12. Unscrew the bolts securing the cooling system pipe to the exhaust manifold.


13. Unscrew the bolt securing the fuel rail to the cooling system pipe.

13. Unscrew the bolt securing the fuel rail to the cooling system pipe.


14. Unscrew the bolts securing the cooling system pipe to the cylinder head.



14. Unscrew the bolts securing the cooling system pipe to the cylinder head.


15. Remove the three bolts securing the heat shield to the cooling system pipe.

15. Remove the three bolts securing the heat shield to the cooling system pipe.


16. Loosen the bolt, remove the coolant pipe from the thermostat housing and discard the gasket.

17. Remove the heat shield.

18. Raise the engine to the correct height to gain access to the coolant pump mounting bolts.

19. Unscrew the 4 bolts of the cooling system pump and remove the pump.

20. Cut the tabs off the water pump gasket (applies to factory installed gaskets only).

21. Remove and discard the coolant pump gasket.

21. Remove and discard the coolant pump gasket.


22. Remove the 4 bolts and the thermostat housing from the coolant pump. Discard the gasket.

Installation


1. Wipe the mating surfaces of the thermostat housing and the coolant pump.

2. Install a new gasket on the thermostat housing.

3. Install the thermostat housing on the cooling system pump, tighten the mounting bolts and tighten them to 8 Nm.

4. Wipe the coolant pump, mating surfaces on the engine and on the upper pipe of the cooling system.

5. Install the coolant pump with a new gasket on the engine. Tighten the bolts. Tightening torque 10 Nm.

6. Install the heat shield.



7. Install a new seal on the coolant distribution pipe, install the pipe on the thermostat housing and tighten the bolt to 8 Nm.

8. Tighten the heat shield mounting bolts. Tightening torque 8 Nm.

9. Tighten the distribution pipe mounting bolts to 20 Nm.

10. Screw in the bolts securing the fuel rail to the distribution pipe and tighten them. Tightening torque 10 Nm.

11. Install the TCR air outlet hose and tighten the clamps.

12. Connect the expansion tank hose to the distribution pipe and secure it with a clamp.

13. Place the hose on the distribution pipe of the cooling system and on the thermostat housing, secure the hose with clamps.

14. Install the hydraulic support.

15. Remove the lower engine mount cross member.

ENGINE - Td4, Inlet and outlet camshafts, Lower engine mount cross member.


16. Install the accessory drive belt.

ENGINE STARTING AND BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM, REPAIR WORK, Attachment drive belt - Td4 engine.


17. Reinstall the wheel(s) and tighten the nuts to 115 Nm.

18. Install the valve cover with gasket.

ENGINE - Td4, Inlet and outlet camshafts, Valve cover gasket:.


19. Connect the negative battery terminal.

20. Fill the engine with coolant.

COOLING SYSTEM: Td4 engine, ADJUSTMENTS, Draining coolant, flushing the system and filling.
