Incorrect use of programs (Freelander 2)

Selecting the wrong program is prevented as follows:

• The icon of the enabled program is permanently displayed on the message center screen in the instrument cluster
• The Terrain Response control unit blocks certain functions in some programs, such as:
  • the cruise control function is only available when special programs are turned off or when the Grass/Gravel/Snow program is turned on
  • the sport mode of the transmission is switched off in all special programs.
• If the ignition has been off for more than 6 hours, the Terrain Response system switches to special programs off mode ("Special Programs off").

Selecting a program that is not appropriate to the road conditions does not pose a danger to the driver and cannot cause damage to the vehicle. Long-term operation of the vehicle with an incorrectly selected program may reduce the service life of some components. The driver may notice a change in the vehicle's dynamic characteristics due to a deterioration in the engine and gearbox response compared to the mode with special programs turned off. In addition, in some programs, the HDC mode is constantly on, as indicated by the illuminated HDC indicator on the instrument panel. The driver may also notice an increase in torque in the active clutch, causing a braking effect when maneuvering using special programs.

Information for the driver

The high-end instrument cluster fitted to vehicles with Terrain Response features a message centre that provides the driver with information about the vehicle. The message centre contains Terrain Response programme icons that indicate the current programme. If no symbol is displayed, this means that no special programme is selected and the system is in special programme off mode ("Special Programs off").



The necessary changes to the subsystem settings are also communicated to the driver by activating indicators on the instrument panel or corresponding messages in the message center (e.g. "HDC OFF").

In certain driving situations, the Terrain Response system also displays tips or warnings to help the driver get the most out of the vehicle, such as the steering wheel angle displayed in the information centre to help prevent driving in deep ruts with the steering lock engaged.
