The gear shift indicator on the instrument panel turns on to notify the driver to shift to a higher gear to reduce fuel consumption. Following the indicator's recommendations can reduce fuel consumption by 5%.

Gear shift indicator:

Gear shift indicator:

The gear shift indicator is standard on vehicles with a manual transmission. It is automatically activated each time the ignition is turned on. However, the driver can deactivate the indicator by pressing the "Eco" button on the control panel.

NOTE: The Eco button also turns the Start/Stop system on and off.

For further information, please refer to the chapter: Starting system (303-06C Starting system - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Vehicles manufactured from 03/2009, Description and operation).

Eco Switch:

The gear shift indicator comes on to notify the driver that a higher gear is required. Depending on the driver's response and driving conditions, the indicator operates as follows:

  • Goes out when upshifting.
  • Goes out before upshifting if driver demands or road conditions change.
  • Goes out after 12 seconds if the indicator is ignored. Either of two events will reset the indicator:
    • the driver changes gear
    • the driver increases speed after exiting a sharp turn

The gear shift indicator is only for driver assistance; the choice of gear remains with the driver, who makes a decision taking into account the driving conditions.

Gear shift indicator:
  • Does not recommend downshifting
  • Unable to predict the slope and curvature of the road ahead
