Towing a car (Freelander 1)

The vehicle has permanent four-wheel drive. When towing a disabled vehicle, strictly follow these instructions:

Towing a vehicle on all wheels with the driver operating the steering wheel and brakes

• Turn the ignition key to position "1" to release the steering wheel lock, then to position "II" to use the brake light, windscreen wiper and direction indicators if necessary.
• Shift the transmission into neutral and make sure HDC (High Degree Contrast Control) is not engaged.
• Attach the towing cable, chain or rope to the towing eye of the vehicle body.
• Release the parking brake.

ATTENTION: If the engine is not running, the brake booster and power steering will not function on the vehicle. Accordingly, the force on the brake pedal and the force applied to the steering wheel will increase. Avoid using the towing eyes of the body to "pull out" the vehicle in particularly difficult road conditions.

Towing with raised wheels using a towing vehicle

In order to install the cardan shafts in the correct position in the future, apply mating marks to the flanges of the cardan shaft, transfer case and gearbox before disconnecting.

Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the vehicle, the rear driveshaft MUST be removed.

If the front axle of the vehicle fits into the body of the tractor, turn the ignition key to position "1". In this position, the steering lock will be unlocked.

CAUTION: Do not turn the ignition key to the "O" position or remove it from the ignition while the vehicle is being towed.

CAUTION: If the vehicle is towed after an accident or electrical failure, disconnect the battery before turning the ignition key to position "I".

CAUTION: The steering wheel and/or tie rods must be locked in the straight ahead position. DO NOT use the factory steering lock for this purpose.

CAUTION: Do not tow or pull a stuck vehicle by attaching a towing rope to the rear subframe. This may cause serious damage to the subframe and body.

CAUTION: When towing another vehicle, always use the rear towing eye only.

Towing eyes

The towing eyes shown in the picture are intended for towing a disabled vehicle only. Do not use them to tow a trailer or caravan.



The front spoiler has one towing eye. It should only be used for towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground.

There is one towing eye on the right side of the rear spoiler. It is used only for towing another vehicle.

Transporting a car on a trailer

The front and rear parts of the body are equipped with fixing loops, which facilitate the fastening of the car during transportation on a trailer or other vehicle.

ATTENTION: It is prohibited to use the parts of the car located under the bottom for fixing. The fixing loops must not be used for towing the car.

Place the vehicle on the trailer platform and apply the parking brake. Put the transmission in neutral.

Fixing loops

The tie-down eyes located at the front and rear of the vehicle are designed to secure the vehicle when being transported on a trailer. DO NOT use the tie-down eyes to tow the vehicle.
