Table of signs of malfunction (Freelander 2)

NOTE: If a component is suspected and the vehicle is still under manufacturer's warranty, refer to the warranty manual (subsection B1.2) or determine if there is any previously approved special program in effect before installing a new component.

Sign of malfunction	Possible reason	Action
Steering wobble	Increased play in the steering system Incorrect steering geometry adjustment	Check for excessive play or clearance in the steering system with the engine running. Check for clearance in several different steering positions. Perform steering geometry and wheel alignment checks. The steering has a pull to the left or right	Damaged, bent, loose steering/suspension components Incorrect steering geometry adjustment	Inspect steering and suspension components for damage/correct alignment. Perform steering geometry and wheel alignment checks. For additional information, refer to: Four-Wheel Alignment (204-00 Suspension System - General Information).
Jerks/periodic increase in required effort when turning the steering wheel from lock to lock The steering feels tight and does not provide self-centering	Seizure of steering or suspension joints Seizure of the outer joints of the steering rod ends or the inner joints of the steering rods Seizure of the steering column or steering cardan joints Misalignment, wear or damage to internal steering components	Disconnect the steering gear from the suspension. Check for free movement in the suspension. Disconnect the steering column from the steering gear. Check the steering column and universal joints for free movement. Check the steering gear for free movement. Repair if necessary.
Noisy operation of the hydraulic power steering	Low or contaminated power steering fluid Air in power steering fluid Kinking or restriction of power steering hoses	Check and top up the power steering fluid if necessary. For more information, please refer to: Removing air from the power steering system (211-00 Steering System-General Information, General Procedures). Check for contamination of the liquid. Check for air ingress into the system. Check the power steering hoses for twisting or reduced capacity. Repair it if necessary.
Noise in the power steering pump	Low or contaminated power steering fluid Wear or damage to internal pump components	Check and add power steering fluid if necessary. For additional information, refer to: Bleeding the Power Steering System (211-00 Steering System - General Information, General Procedures). Check for fluid contamination. Check for excessive pump noise. Install a new pump if necessary. Refer to the note on installing a new component at the top of the Symptom Chart.
Noise in the steering gear	Low or contaminated power steering fluid Wear or damage to internal steering components	Check and top up the power steering fluid if necessary. For more information, please refer to: Removing air from the power steering system (211-00 Steering System-General Information, General Procedures). Check for contamination of the liquid. Check for increased steering noise. If necessary, install a new steering mechanism. Refer to the note on installing a new item at the top of the Fault Indication Table.
Noise in the steering column	Steering column contamination or lack of lubrication in the steering cardan joints	Check the steering column and its universal joints. Repair if necessary
The steering feels tighter than it should be throughout its entire operating range	Insufficient gain	Check the power steering pump pressure
