The multi-function switch is located on the left side of the steering column and performs the following functions:
- Switching headlights from low beam to high beam and vice versa
- High beam headlights alarm
- Turning on left or right turn signals
- Trip computer functions
The high beam and headlamp flashing functions are hardwired to the steering wheel module. When the switch is activated in any position, the ground circuit is closed through the switch for the selected function, which is read by the steering wheel module. The steering wheel module then sends a message over the LIN bus to the CJB, which activates the selected function.
The direction indicator lamps are connected and operate in a similar way - by closing the ground circuit for the selected function. This is read by the steering wheel module and the module then transmits a message relating to the selected function to the CJB which in turn activates the required direction indicator lamp.
