The AFS control module processes these signals and provides an output signal to the headlamp leveling motors to adjust the horizontal position of the headlamps according to vehicle speed and steering angle.
NOTE: For markets where vehicles are supplied with Daytime Running Light (DRL), the AFS system does not operate when the DRL system is active.
The AFS control module is connected to the high-speed CAN bus and receives information from other vehicle systems. The control module is connected to the AFS power module via the LIN bus. The AFS control module calculates, using input data from other systems, the desired horizontal adjustment position of the headlamps. The position information is then transmitted via the LIN bus to the AFS power module located on each headlamp assembly. This module then provides the appropriate signals to power the AFS stepper motors in the headlamp to move them to the appropriate position.
The horizontal position of the headlights depends on a number of input variables. The position is determined by the vehicle speed and the steering angle. When reverse gear is selected, the headlights move to the straight ahead position to avoid dazzling other road users.
To achieve good light distribution, the headlights' swivel angles are different, for example, when making a left turn, the left headlight deflects at a greater angle than the right one.
If there is a malfunction in the AFS system, the indicator lamp on the instrument panel will flash to alert the driver of the malfunction. The AFS indicator lamp lights when the ignition switch is in power mode 6 and will flash continuously until the malfunction is corrected.
When the AFS warning light comes on, it does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with the AFS system. The problem could be caused by a problem with another system, such as the steering angle sensor, or by a missing vehicle speed signal that prevents the AFS system from working properly.
