The tail light assembly is a single unit that includes a brake light/tail light, turn signal, reversing light and fog light. The unit contains a total of five bayonet-mounted bulbs (six bulbs for vehicles supplied to the US, for which a side marker light is added). The bulb sockets are inserted into the holes in the light housing and secured by turning. Each socket is connected by wires to a connector located on the rear of the light housing.

The tail light assembly is built into a recess in the vehicle body. The tail light housing is attached to the vehicle body with two studs located along the outer edge of the housing. The light is attached with two screws, which are located on the inner edge of the housing near the trunk door opening.



Brake light/tail light


The upper lamp is both a brake light and a side light, using a 21/5 W bulb with a bayonet base. The brake light uses a 21 W bulb, and the side light uses a 5 W bulb.

The brake lamp is illuminated when the ignition is in ignition power mode 6 and the brake pedal switch is active, closing when the brake pedal is depressed. At the same time, the high-mounted brake lamp is illuminated when the brake pedal is depressed. The brake lamps can also be illuminated by the anti-lock brake system (ABS) when the hill descent control (HDC) system is active. The ABS module sends a message to the CJB via the high-speed CAN bus, which supplies power to the brake lamps and the high-mounted brake lamp.

The side lights are switched on by selecting the side lights or headlights position with the light switch. The side lights can be operated at all times and regardless of whether the power mode for ignition 6 is on. The side lights will also be switched on if the light switch module is in the AUTO position and the CJB receives a signal from the rain/light sensor to switch on the outside lights.

Direction indicator


The upper light is both a brake light and a side light, using a 21/5W bayonet-mounted bulb. On vehicles from the 2009 model year onwards, the 'Silvervision' bulb is used.

The direction indicators are activated by the left multifunction switch on the steering column or the hazard warning switch. The multifunction switch on the steering column only works when the ignition is in power mode 6, the hazard warning switch always works. The direction indicators operate with an on/off cycle of 360 ms.



If a bulb burns out, the other turn signal bulb on that side of the car flashes at its normal rate. However, the corresponding turn signal indicator light in the instrument cluster warns the driver of the burnt out bulb by flashing at twice the rate.

Reversing light


The reversing light is located next to the direction indicator and contains a 21-watt bulb with a bayonet mount.

The reversing lamp is switched on when the ignition is in ignition power mode 6 and the CJB receives a signal via the medium speed CAN bus that reverse gear is engaged. The automatic transmission is equipped with a limit switch that responds to the engagement of reverse gear.

Rear fog light


The rear fog light is located at the very bottom of the tail light and contains a 21W bulb with a bayonet mount.

The rear fog lamps are controlled by the light switch module. When the ignition switch is in ignition power mode 6 and the light control module is in the parking lamp or headlamp position, the rear fog lamp button on the light control module can be pressed to activate the rear fog lamps. When the rear fog lamps are turned on, the corresponding indicator lamp on the instrument cluster comes on.

Side marker light


(US vehicles only) The rear fog light is located at the very bottom of the tail light assembly and contains a 21-watt bulb with a bayonet mount.

The side marker lamp bulb, mounted in a socket, is located in an aperture in the rear lamp housing and must be rotated to lock it in place. The side marker lamps are always active when the side marker lamps are selected to be on using the lighting control module. The side marker lamps will also be on if the lighting control module rotary switch is in the AUTO position and the CJB receives a signal from the light sensor to turn on the outside lamps.
