Camshaft Roller Tappet Remover/Replacer 303-581

Removal


1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. For more information, refer to Specification

2. Remove the left cylinder head cover. For more information, refer to Left Valve Cover (12.29.43)

3. Remove the right cylinder head cover. For more information, refer to Right Valve Cover (12.29.44)

4. Remove the viscous fan assembly. For more information, refer to Cooling Fan (26.25.19)

NOTE: Before removal, make sure the camshaft lobe is against the camshaft roller follower.


NOTE: Mark each crankshaft roller tappet and lash adjuster. Ensure each part is in its original installation position.


Using a special tool, remove the camshaft roller tappets. Compress the valve spring.

6. Turn the engine over to access the remaining camshaft roller tappets.

7. Remove the hydraulic slack adjusters.

Installation


1.
NOTE: Reinstall parts to their original positions.


Install hydraulic slack adjusters.
  • Clean the contact surfaces of the parts.
  • Lubricate the parts with clean engine oil.
2.
NOTE: Reinstall parts to their original positions.


Using the special tool, install the camshaft roller tappets.
  • Clean the contact surfaces of the parts.
  • Lubricate the parts with clean engine oil.
  • Install the parts back in place in reverse order.

3. Turn the engine over to access the remaining camshaft roller tappets.



4. Install the viscous fan assembly. For more information, refer to Cooling Fan (26.25.19)

5. Install the right cylinder head cover. For more information, refer to Right Valve Cover (12.29.44)

6. Install the left cylinder head cover. For more information, refer to Left Valve Cover (12.29.43)

7. Connect the ground cable to the battery. For more information, refer to Specifications
