The intermediate shaft assembly is located centrally at the top of the cylinder block. It provides drive to each camshaft via a chain. The left camshaft is driven from the front of the intermediate shaft, and the right camshaft is driven from the rear. The intermediate shaft is driven by the crankshaft gear at the front of the engine via a chain. The shaft is held in place by a thrust plate.
