General information

The V6 petrol engine is a 4.0-litre, 6-cylinder V-engine with a 60-degree cylinder bank angle, 2 valves per cylinder and a single overhead camshaft. The engine's exhaust emissions meet the requirements of the European ECD4 emission standard and the US federal legislation Tier 2 Bin 8; to limit emissions of harmful substances, the engine uses catalytic converters, an electronic engine management system, forced crankcase ventilation and an exhaust gas recirculation system. The engine cooling system has a small volume and a high coolant consumption. The fuel injection system is controlled by the engine control unit (ECM).

The cylinder block is cast iron with a cast aluminum ladder frame and balance shaft bolted to the bottom of the block. The cylinder heads are cast aluminum and feature vinyl ester composite camshaft covers. The one-piece oil pan is stamped steel. The intake manifold is cast aluminum and includes a central receiver with six intake ports. For more information, see Intake Air Distribution and Filtering (303-12A Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 4.0L) Each bank of cylinders has its own dual-layer stainless steel exhaust manifold. To reduce engine noise, a noise-insulating plastic cover is installed on top of it.

Technical specifications

The engine has the following features:
  • Six-cylinder V-shaped cast iron cylinder block with a cylinder bank angle of 60 degrees and liquid cooling
  • The pistons contain two compression rings and a three-piece oil scraper ring.
  • Two aluminum cylinder heads, each of which includes one hollow camshaft
  • Valve levers with hydraulic lash adjusters
  • The front engine cover is made of aluminum and houses the coolant pump.
  • Each camshaft is driven by a separate single-row chain.
  • Electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
  • Reducing toxicity of exhaust gases by means of catalytic converters
  • Cast aluminum ladder frame motor construction
  • Fully balanced cast iron crankshaft
  • Advanced engine management system including electronic throttle control
  • ECM controlled electronic intake manifold tuning valve (IMTV)
  • The engine exhaust emissions comply with the requirements of the European ECD4 emission standard and the US federal legislation Tier 2 Bin 8
