The front seat base is made from high-strength extruded steel and is designed to withstand loads exceeding current legal strength requirements. The seat base is shaped to prevent under-belt diving, helping to keep the occupant in the seat during a frontal impact. The seat back is made from high-strength steel and has a wire suspension system for increased comfort. The back is attached to both sides of the seat base using a bracket and a hinge made from high-strength steel.
Inside the seat base and backrest, molded dual-firm sections and pressed foam are inserted to shape the cushion and backrest. The design of the seats provides support, comfort and an ergonomic position for the driver and passenger.
The driver and front passenger seats have additional safety features. The driver's seat has a seat position sensor, the front passenger seat has a seat load classification sensor (depending on vehicle specification) and a passenger seat load detection system. The driver and front passenger seat safety features provide input signals to control the deployment of airbags and seat belt pretensioners.
For additional information, refer to the chapter: Supplemental Restraint System of Air Bags and Seat Belt Tensioners (SRS) (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, Description and Operation).
The front seat belt buckles are integrated into the seat to provide improved occupant retention and restraint. For additional information, refer to the chapter: Seat Belt System (501-20A Seat Belt System, Description and Operation).
