Vehicle antenna systems include the following elements:
- AM antenna (embedded in glass)
- FM antenna (embedded in glass)
- FM antenna tuning to the best station (if available, embedded in glass)
- TV antenna (if available, embedded in glass)
- multi-band telephone antenna (if available, installed on the roof)
- GPS antenna (if present, installed on the rear spoiler)
- SDARS antenna (US only, roof mounted)
- VICS antenna and infrared antenna (if available, Japan only)
FM Antenna Booster
The AM/FM antennas are integrated into the side glass and tailgate glass. In vehicles with a standard audio system, the AM/FM antenna is installed in the rear right window. Cars with a high-end audio system are equipped with a system for tuning to the best station in the FM band. This allows the system to automatically select the stronger of the two received signals to provide the best FM station reception. The basic AM/FM antenna built into the rear right window is connected to the aerial amplifier located above the window. In addition to the amplifier and antenna in the side window, the best station system also uses the heated tailgate glass antenna and the FM antenna amplifier mounted on the top of the tailgate glass.
Antenna Amplifier TMC
Traffic message channel signals (TMS) are received as conventional radio signals via the Radio Data System network (RDS). However, these signals are transmitted in separate circuits via their own aerial amplifier located on the right rear window. For more information refer to Navigation System (419-07 Navigation System)
GPS Satellite Dish
The GPS antenna is located in the top spoiler of the luggage compartment, on the right side. The GPS antenna is connected to the navigation system computer with a coaxial cable. For more information refer to Navigation System (419-07 Navigation System)
TV Antenna Booster
If the vehicle is equipped with a TV system, it uses 4 antennas, two in each rear side window. Each antenna uses a separate antenna amplifier connected to the TV module with a coaxial cable. For more information refer to Video System (415-07 Video System)
Multi-band telephone antenna
Multi-band phone antenna built into the housing mounted on the center back of the car roof and connected directly to the phone control module (TCM) using a coaxial cable. For more information refer to Cellular Phone (419-08 Cellular Phone)
Satellite digital radio antenna SDARS (US only)
The SDARS antenna is built into a housing mounted on the center back of the vehicle's roof. The antenna is equipped with two connectors for connecting to the receiver: the first one is for satellite communication, and the second one is for terrestrial communication with relay stations.
The antenna consists of two main components:
- printed dipole antenna for receiving signals from satellites
- printed single-pole antenna for receiving signals from ground stations
VICS responder antenna (Japan only)
The VICS controller uses an antenna located in the rear right window to receive data. In addition, the VICS controller uses an infrared antenna mounted on the top middle of the control panel next to the sunlight sensor. For more information refer to Navigation System (419-07 Navigation System)
