All major auxiliary units are driven by a single 6-groove belt. A separate 8-groove belt is used to drive the cooling system fan.
Both the main and auxiliary belts are driven from the crankshaft through a torsional vibration damper. Belt tension is maintained by an automatic tensioner mounted on the left accessory bracket. An intermediate belt pulley mounted on the right accessory bracket increases the wrap angle of the alternator pulley.
A rubber layer located between two cylindrical surfaces of the torsional vibration damper absorbs torsional vibrations of the crankshaft and shock loads in the drive.
The automatic tensioner consists of a spring-loaded lever with an intermediate pulley located on it. To remove and install the belt, the tensioner lever is moved counterclockwise (when viewed from the front of the engine). There is a belt wear indicator on the back of the tensioner lever.
