Forced deployment of the SRS component (Freelander 1)

If a vehicle with a non-deployed airbag is being scrapped, the airbag must be activated forcibly. Always follow these rules:

CAUTION: Only personnel who have undergone the necessary training are allowed to perform work on activating the SRS system components.

CAUTION: A deployed air bag or seat belt pretensioner becomes very hot. DO NOT approach a deployed air bag module for at least 30 minutes after deployment.

CAUTION: Activate the SRS component only with the recommended special equipment and only in a well-ventilated area. Before activating the SRS component, make sure it is not damaged and does not have any breaks or cracks. Notify the appropriate authorities.

CAUTION: If the vehicle is to be recycled, the installed air bags and seat belt pretensioners must be activated in accordance with the instructions in this manual.

CAUTION: Contact with chemicals produced when an SRS component deploys or fails can be hazardous to your health. Wear protective clothing when handling SRS components. DO NOT eat, drink, or smoke while handling SRS components.

WARNING: Deployment of the airbag or seat belt pretensioner may cause injury to personnel in the immediate vicinity of the deploying component. In the event of injury, immediate medical attention is required. Possible causes of injury include:

• contusion - the deployment of an airbag or pretensioner causes a sharp movement-impact of the component.
• deafening - caused by the loud noise when an airbag or seat belt pretensioner deploys.
• burns - heating of parts and gases to high temperatures.
• eye and respiratory tract irritation - caused by gases and particles generated when the airbag deploys.

CAUTION: Ensure that the SRS component is securely supported on the support before forcibly deploying it.

CAUTION: When activating SRS components, the safety rules and the sequence of actions recommended in the Repair Manual must be strictly followed. The following safety rules MUST be followed:

• Use only special equipment for activation.
• Before starting the deployment process, perform the diagnostics of the working equipment recommended in the "SRS System Repair" section of this Manual.
• Activation of airbags and seat belt pretensioners should only be carried out in well-ventilated areas specifically designed for this purpose.
• Before activation, make sure that the airbags and seat belt pretensioners are not damaged.
• Notify the appropriate authorities of your intention to activate the airbags or seat belt pretensioners.
• When SRS components are activated, no one should be within 15 meters (45 feet) of the activation point.
• The activation adapter must be connected according to the instructions in the SRS section of this manual. The activation adapter MUST NOT be connected to the battery until it is connected to the airbag or seat belt pretensioner connector.
• When activating the seat belt pretensioner, make sure the pretensioner is securely fastened to its mounting points.
• When removing deployed air bags or pretensioners, wear protective clothing. Wear gloves when handling deployed components. After removing from the vehicle, seal the deployed component in a plastic bag.
• If any SRS component has deployed on a vehicle, all SRS components must be replaced. DO NOT reuse SRS components that have been removed from a vehicle.
• When connecting the activation equipment, do not lean on the air bag module or seat belt pretensioner.

CAUTION: When deployed, parts of the air bag become very hot and may cause burns. Wait 30 minutes after deployment before touching the air bag module.
