Cylinder head — removal and installation (Freelander 1)

Dismantling

1. Remove the 8 nuts and the exhaust manifold. Discard the gaskets.



2. Using the LRT-12-034 valve spring compressor, compress the valve springs, remove the two valve spring crackers, release the spring and remove the LRT-12-034 valve spring compressor.

3. Remove the valve spring with the plate.

4. Remove the valve from the cylinder head.

5. Install the LRT-12-206 valve stem seal remover onto the valve stem seal, twist to grip the seal and remove the LRT-12-206 valve stem seal remover with the seal.

6. Do the same on the remaining valves, laying out the removed parts in the order in which they were on the cylinder head.

Installation

1. Wipe the lower surface of the cylinder head.



2. Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, check the deformation of the lower plane of the head in the directions shown in the figure.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS, Engine - Diesel Td4.

ATTENTION: Milling of the lower plane of the head is not allowed. If the deformation of the lower plane is higher than permissible, replace the cylinder head.

3. Clean and inspect the valve seats.

ATTENTION: Valve and seat chamfers cannot be adjusted.

4. Insert the new valve into the guide so that the top of the valve stem is on the cut of the guide sleeve.


5. Install a dial indicator on the cylinder head and set the indicator to "zero" by resting its foot on the valve plate. By rocking the valve sideways, determine the degree of wear of the valve guide. If the plate deviation exceeds 0.50 mm, replace the cylinder head and valves.

CAUTION: Valve guides are not replaceable.

6. Clean the valve seats thoroughly.

7. Clean the combustion chamber walls and exhaust channels.

8. Wipe the valve, spring plate and crackers.

9. Lubricate the valves and valve guides with clean engine oil.

10. Insert the valve.



11. Place the protective cover LRT-12-104 over the valve stem.

12. Install the new cap and remove the LRT-12-104 cover.



13. Place the cap completely onto the valve guide by pressing it with the LRT-12-207 tool.



14. Install the valve spring with the plate.

15. Use the LRT-12-034 valve spring compressor to compress the valve spring. Install the valve spring crackers, release the spring and remove the LRT-12-034 valve spring compressor.

16. Do the same with the remaining valves.

17. Wipe the exhaust manifold and the mating surface on the cylinder head.

18. Install the exhaust manifold onto the cylinder head using new gaskets.

19. Screw on the exhaust manifold mounting nuts and tighten them. Tightening torque 24 Nm.
