Measurement options
- Comparative measurements can also be made on the outside of the body. Depending on the damage, comparative and diagonal measurements can be made using a compass, telescopic rod, tape measure or ruler.
NOTE: When checking dimensional stability on both sides of the vehicle, the same base points should be selected (e.g. drillings, edges, embossing, etc.).
- All important dimensions are listed in the section "Body Repair: Dimension Check". For more information, see the chapter: Body and frame (501-26 Body Repairs - Vehicle Special Information and Approval Checks, Description and Operation).
- Measurements using a slipway.
- To accurately check the dimensions of the body, the use of a slipway is required. Measuring systems are categorized according to how they work:
- Mechanical measurements.
- Optical measurements.
Fast and accurate measurement results can be obtained using computerized measurement systems.
To check the dimensions in length, width and height, at least three intact body points are required.
In some cases, this may require access to such points. All of these measurement systems can be used to perform body measurements, provided the appropriate equipment is available.
Repair planning
Before starting repairs, the following decisions must be made:
- The car needs to be installed on the slipway (straightening stand) Or can it be fixed in another way?
- Is it necessary to carry out control measurements of the body?
- Do I need to remove components such as the engine?
NOTE: It is preferable to repair body parts rather than replace them as this will avoid damage to the entire body frame.
- What body parts need to be replaced?
- Which body parts can be repaired?
Getting spare parts
The availability of spare parts often determines how easily a body repair can be completed. The following procedure is recommended:
- Get all vehicle details including type, vehicle identification number, trim code, engine identification letters, original registration data, and more.
- Identify all metal parts that need to be replaced.
- Identify all connected items that need to be replaced, including small items like rivets, clips, etc.
