Gear shift cables (Freelander 2)

Removal

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

WARNING: Ensure that the vehicle is supported securely.

2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to the procedure: Propeller Shaft - Vehicle does not include: Diesel Fuel Filter (205-01 Propeller Shaft, Removal and Installation).

3. Remove the floor console. Refer to procedure: Floor Console (501-12 Instrument Panel and Console, Removal and Installation).

4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to procedure: Air Cleaner (303-12A Intake Air Distribution and Filtration - 3.2L NA - I6, Removal and Installation).

5. Remove the instrument panel and lower trim panels.





7. Remove the right lower instrument panel bracket.

NOTE: The transmission must be in neutral before removing the cables; this will ensure that the cables are laid out correctly during assembly.

11. Remove the cable seal.











15. Remove the gear shift cable assembly.

NOTE: This step requires the assistance of a second mechanic.

Installation

1. Install the shift cable assembly.

NOTE: This step requires the assistance of a second mechanic.

2. Install the gear shift lever. Tightening torque: 10 Nm

3. Secure the cables in the clamps.

4. Install the heat shield.

5. Secure the selector cables.

6. Install the seal plate. Tightening torque: 7 Nm

7. Connect the selector cable ball joints.

8. Disconnect the left cable clamp.



9. Allow the gear shift lever to stop in neutral.

10. Secure the selector cable clamp without changing the position of the gear selector.

11. Install the instrument panel bracket. Tightening torque: 25 Nm

12. Secure the drain pipe and heater duct.

13. Install the instrument panel and lower trim panels.



14. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to procedure: Air Cleaner (303-12A Intake Air Distribution and Filtration - 3.2L NA - I6, Removal and Installation).

15. Install the floor console. Refer to procedure: Floor Console (501-12 Instrument Panel and Console, Removal and Installation).

16. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to procedure: Propeller Shaft - Vehicle does not include: Diesel Fuel Filter (205-01 Propeller Shaft, Removal and Installation).
