Inspection and verification (Discovery 3)

1. Ensure that the customer's complaint is justified. If a road test is required, ensure that the vehicle is in a safe condition to perform the test.

2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical and electrical problems.

Check the correct tire pressure, size and tread pattern Check for damage to the tire and wheel rim Check the wheel fastenings Check the power steering fluid level and hydraulic drive for oil leaks. Check the condition and tension of the power steering pump drive belt Check the power steering pump for secure mounting and for wear, damage, or increased noise. Check the steering gear assembly for damage, wear and secure mounting. Check hydraulic lines and cooler lines for damage and proper routing. Check the steering joints for damage, increased clearance, wear and for secure fastening. Check the steering column and steering joints for damage, increased clearance, wear and for secure fastening.

Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) and Electrical Circuits CAN electrical circuits (Control Area Network)

3. If an obvious cause for a problem you have identified or a problem described by the customer is found, resolve it before moving on to further action. (if possible).

NOTE: Generic scan tools cannot read the codes listed or can only read 5-digit codes. Match the 5 digits from the scan tool with the first 5 digits of the listed 7-digit code to identify the fault. (the last 2 digits provide additional information readable by a manufacturer approved diagnostic system).

Use the approved diagnostic system or scan tool to retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before referring to the symptom chart or DTC index.

Since DTCs are stored in more than one module, a full vehicle data read is recommended.
