2 | - | Coil Spring and Steering Angle Sensor |
The steering wheel module contains the steering angle sensor, coil spring and multi-function switches located on the steering column as a single unit. The steering angle sensor is connected directly to the coil spring.
The steering wheel module is fixed to the top of the steering column with two screws, and receives electrical power from the main wiring harness through a 4-pin electrical connector located on the side of the unit. The module serves as the location and electrical connection for two multifunction switches.
The input signals from the steering wheel angle sensor are received and processed by the steering wheel module to calculate the steering angle and the rate of change of the steering wheel angle. The information is sent over the high speed CAN bus for use by the ABS module.
Steering angle sensor
The steering wheel angle sensor is connected to the steering wheel with two locating pins. The steering angle sensor monitors the rotation of the steering wheel and provides information about the steering angle and the speed of the steering wheel.
An impulse wheel and 16 optical digital sensors are installed inside the steering wheel angle sensor. The rotation of the pulse wheel is read by optical digital sensors to generate steering wheel speed signals. The steering wheel angle sensor is capable of measuring +/- 720 degrees of rotation, although the steering gear only allows +/-540 degrees of rotation at the maximum.
Signals from the steering angle sensor are transmitted via the high-speed CAN bus and received and processed by other systems such as DSC. The transmitted information contains details of steering angle and steering wheel speed along with signal integrity information.
If a malfunction occurs in the steering angle sensor, a DTC will be generated and stored in the steering angle sensor memory. Steering wheel angle sensor failure information is also stored in the ABS module, which causes the corresponding warning lamps to come on, depending on the functions in question (DSC/ETC, ABS, EBA/EBD, HDC). A warning horn also sounds to warn the driver of a malfunction.
On vehicles equipped with an instrument panel "high series", a message in the message center is displayed only if a malfunction affects the operation of the HDC.
For more information, see the chapter:
- instrument panel (413-01 Instrument panel, Description and function)
- Information and message center (413-08 Information and Message Centre, Description and Operation)
It is possible to read information from the steering angle sensor and the ABS module using Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment.
Coil spring
The coil spring is a rotatable coupling that provides the electrical connection between the fixed steering wheel module and the steering wheel-mounted controls and the driver's airbag in the auxiliary restraint system (SRS).
The coil spring has a colored indicator that is visible through the clear plexiglass cover when the steering wheel is removed and the steering angle sensor is centered. The indicator verifies that the steering angle sensor and steering system are properly aligned after steering repair.
Service Information
Before separating the steering components from the steering column, set the coil spring to the center position (indicator is visible) and point the wheels straight ahead. The coil spring is held in the center position by a set screw.
