General Provisions
The 4.4-liter engine uses one spark plug per cylinder in its ignition system. The spark plug electrode has an iridium coating, and each spark plug has its own ignition coil. The ignition coils are controlled directly by the ECM. (engine control unit).
Power to the ignition coils comes from the power relay through the VLZ fuse (battery Circuit Junction Box). To suppress radio interference, capacitors are installed parallel to the power supply circuit of the ignition coils.
Each ignition coil has a transistor switch for the primary coil power supply circuit. The ECM () controls power supply by applying a signal to the base of the transistor switch. The ECM () monitors the operation of the ignition coils using a feedback signal from the power supply circuit of each coil. If a malfunction is detected by the ECM (engine control unit) writes the corresponding code
ECM () depending on the battery voltage and crankshaft speed, regulates the duration of the closed state of the primary winding to ensure the constancy of the discharge energy formed in the secondary winding. This ensures good spark formation without overloading the primary winding circuit by current and overheating the ignition coils.
ECM (engine control unit) calculates the ignition timing based on the following data:
- Engine crankshaft speed.
- Position of the camshaft.
- Engine load.
- Coolant temperature.
- Tendency to detonate.
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, the position of the selector is taken into account.
- Idle mode requirements are taken into account.
