Precautions to prevent breakdowns


To avoid damaging your vehicle when performing repairs, always follow these guidelines.
  • Always cover fenders and seats with protective cloth before starting work. Avoid spilling brake fluid or battery acid on paintwork. If this happens, rinse the area immediately with water.
  • Before starting work, disconnect the "ground" terminal of the battery, see SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT.
  • Always use the recommended tool or equivalent when listed in the manual.
  • Protect bearing surfaces, lubricated surfaces and threads from damage.

Removal components


Before removing a component, clean the component itself and the area around it as much as possible.
  • Close the holes created when removing the component with process plugs.
  • To prevent fluid leakage and foreign particles from entering the system, immediately cap the ends of the fuel, oil, and hydraulic lines disconnected during component removal. Plastic caps or plugs are suitable for this purpose.
  • Close the open ends of the oil passages with wedge-shaped, wooden plugs or clearly visible plastic stoppers.
  • Immediately after removing the component, place it in an appropriate container.
  • for storing the removed component and parts removed from it, use an individual container.
  • Before removing a component, prepare a work area for disassembling it, a container for storing it, as well as markers or stickers for marking it and wire for fixing it.



Disassembly


Maintain extreme cleanliness in the workplace. This requirement must be strictly observed when working with brake, fuel or hydraulic system components. Particles of dirt or cleaning rags can cause serious damage if they get inside these systems.

Perform the following operations:
  • Blow out all internal cavities, crevices, oil channels and fuel passages with compressed air. Ensure correct installation of new sealing rings to replace those damaged during disassembly.
  • Mark the mating surfaces with paint to ensure correct assembly of the unit. Do not use a scriber or cutter for this purpose - mechanical impacts may cause cracks or damage parts.
  • Wire the mating parts together. This will prevent incorrect assembly (for example, roller bearing components).
  • Attach tags with wire to parts that need to be replaced with new ones, as well as to parts that need to undergo defect detection. Keep these parts separate from parts suitable for reassembly.
  • Never dispose of components until new parts are purchased. Only after making sure that they are identical can you dispose of the old part.

Detergents


Use only recommended cleaning agents or equivalent substitutes to clean parts. If volatile substances are used for cleaning, ensure that the work area is effectively ventilated. If the units contain components that may be damaged by the action of cleaning agents, their use should be avoided.

When washing the engine compartment, do not direct the water jet at the engine control module (ECM), as water entering the ECM may damage electronic components.



General inspection


Before reassembly, all components must be carefully inspected for signs of wear and damage.
  • Inspection of components should only be carried out after they have been thoroughly washed. Even minor oil stains may hide emerging defects.
  • If it is necessary to measure the dimensions of a part in order to compare its dimensions with the permissible ones, then the appropriate measuring instrument (Johannsen plates, micrometers, dial indicators) should be used. Make sure that the measuring instrument and devices are calibrated and in good condition.
  • If the dimensions of a part are outside the maximum permissible values or the part shows signs of damage, it is subject to rejection.
  • A part is considered suitable for reinstallation if its dimensions are within the established tolerances and it shows no signs of damage.
  • To measure the clearance in plain bearings use the 'Plastigauge' 12, type PG-1.
