If the TCM detects a transmission fault, it will enter a fail-safe mode to control the transmission to avoid damage and maintain the vehicle's ability to drive itself. If possible, reverse will be available, as well as 3rd gear only.

When a malfunction is detected, the TCM sends a message to the instrument cluster using the high-speed CAN bus. The instrument cluster illuminates the MIL (if necessary) and displays a message on the information center display.

Some transmission failures are registered without turning on the MIL indicator light or displaying a fault message, but the driver may notice a deterioration in the quality of the gearshift.
