CAUTION: Do not drive the vehicle if the transmission fluid level is low as this may cause internal failure.
NOTE: When checking the transmission fluid level, the fluid temperature must be within 50°C (122°F) - 60°C (140°F). If the temperature exceeds this value, stop checking and allow the transmission fluid to cool.
This vehicle is not equipped with a fluid level indicator. Incorrect transmission fluid level may affect transmission operation and cause transmission damage.
To properly check and add transmission fluid: For additional information, refer to: (307-01 Automatic/Transaxle Transmission) Checking Transmission Fluid Level - 3.2L NA - I6 (General Procedures), Checking Transmission Fluid Level - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4 (General Procedures).
Checking the condition of the transmission fluid
Use the following procedure to check the condition of the transmission fluid, which is a good indicator of the internal condition of the transmission:
1. Check the fluid level.
2. Pay attention to the color and smell of the liquid. In normal condition, the color of the liquid should be reddish, not brown or black. If in doubt, compare the liquid with the liquid from a new sealed container.
3. Let the liquid drip onto a paper towel and examine the stain.
4. If there is evidence of solid material, the transmission oil pan (for transmission fluid) should be removed for further inspection.
