The AW F21 is a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission manufactured by Aisin AW in Japan. This transmission features the latest technology in automatic transmissions for transverse all-wheel drive (AWD) units. This transmission features lock-up slip control, 'CommandShift™' functions, automatic and driver-selectable modes for optimum performance on and off-road.
The transmission is controlled by the TCM module, which contains software that controls the operation of the semi-automatic "CommandShift™" mode. The TCM allows the transmission to be operated as a conventional automatic transmission by moving the selector lever to the P, R, N or D positions. Moving the selector across the gate to the "M/S" position puts the transmission in the electronic "Sport" mode. Further movement of the lever in the longitudinal direction, to the + or - position, puts the transmission in the electronic mechanical "CommandShift™" mode.
For more information, see the chapter: External controls (307-05 External controls for an automatic transmission/ gearbox in a block with a drive axle, Description and operating principle).
The AW F21 gearbox has the following characteristics:
- Does not require maintenance
- Torque overload capacity: 450 Nm
- Transmission oil is filled for the entire service life
- The torque converter has a controlled slip function with electronically adjustable lock-up control in gears 2 - 6
- The TCM selects the gear shift control programs
- TCM has adaptive capability and ensures high shift quality throughout the life of the transmission
- TCM diagnostic resources are available via the high-speed CAN bus
