The rotary type oil pump is located between the oil sump and the oil sump housing and is attached with four bolts to the rear of the balancer assembly. An additional bolt on the strainer serves to attach the oil pump to the dipstick tube. The 21 tooth oil pump sprocket is driven by the 18 tooth crankshaft sprocket via a 48 link single row chain without tensioner.
The oil pickup tube and strainer are located under the balancer assembly and are immersed in the oil bath. A connection between the oil pump outlet, balance shaft housing port, and cylinder block directs pressurized oil from the oil pump to the oil filter/radiator assembly.
The oil pump generates a maximum oil pressure of 6.5 bar at 4500 rpm, a possible flow of 50 liters per minute. The safety valve in the oil pump outlet port protects the oil pump and lubrication system components from excessive pressure in the system. The valve opens at approximately 8 bar to relieve excess oil pressure and direct excess oil back to the oil sump.
