The rotary type oil pump is located between the oil pan and oil pan housing and is secured with four bolts to the rear of the balancer assembly. An additional bolt on the strainer secures the oil pump to the dipstick tube. The 21-tooth oil pump sprocket is driven by the 18-tooth crankshaft sprocket via a 48-link, single-row, tensioner-less chain.
The oil inlet pipe and strainer are located under the balancer assembly and are immersed in an oil bath. The connection between the oil pump outlet, the port on the balance shaft housing and the cylinder block directs pressurized oil from the oil pump to the oil filter assembly with the radiator.
The oil pump generates a maximum oil pressure of 6.5 bar at 4,500 rpm, the possible delivery is 50 liters per minute. A safety valve in the outlet channel of the oil pump protects the elements of the oil pump and the lubrication system from excess pressure in the system. The valve opens at approximately 8 bar to release excess oil pressure and directs excess oil back to the oil sump.
