The combined engine oil cooler and oil filter assembly is mounted on the left side of the cylinder block, in line with cylinder number 3. The filter housing contains a replaceable paper filter element, which can be accessed by unscrewing the cover on the filter housing.
The surface of the filter housing mates with the cylinder block outlet ports to supply and return oil through the filter housing. A short hose connects the oil cooler to the cylinder block and supplies coolant to the oil cooler. A hose between the oil cooler and the front of the cylinder head provides coolant return to the cooling system temperature control module.
The oil filter housing contains a built-in thermostatic valve that controls oil flow through the oil cooler in response to oil temperature. Oil from the cylinder block passes through the oil filter housing, part of the flow is directed through the oil cooler before returning to the cylinder block.
The oil pressure sensor has a threaded mount; it is located in the oil filter housing and is wired to the ECM. For more information, see the chapter: Electronic Engine Controls (303-14 Electronic Engine Controls - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Description and function).
