The cylinder head and camshaft cover are manufactured as mating elements. These elements are milled together and precisely positioned using two adjusting bushings. These two elements may only be installed in pairs; their separate replacement is not permitted. The cylinder head and camshaft cover are sealed against each other during assembly using a gasket and silicone-based sealant and are secured with 27 bolts. An oil seal installed in the front of the cylinder head seals the exhaust camshaft housing. The open ports at the rear of the cylinder head are sealed by O-rings for the vacuum pump and the high-pressure fuel pump.
Two adjusting sleeves ensure correct positioning of the cylinder head and gasket relative to the cylinder block. The cylinder head is fixed to the cylinder block with 10 recessed bolts.
NOTE: The cylinder head bolts are not accessible when the camshaft cover is installed.
NOTE: Re-machining of the cylinder head is not permitted.
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy, the valve seats and guides are made of sintered steel. The cylinder head undergoes precision machining, it contains four combustion chambers, housings of the lower bearing shells of the camshafts, oil channels and galleries for the coolant, as well as openings and housings of the air intake system, valve mechanism and fuel system.
The cylinder head design ensures maximum air flow and swirl formation in the combustion chambers. The seats of the two intake valves have protruding sections that promote swirl of the injected air. In combination with the action of the spiral port of the intake manifold, the swirl effect of the two intake port profiles ensures complete mixing of air and injected fuel and their passage to the outer edge of the combustion chamber.
The camshaft cover is made of aluminum alloy, its upper surface is machined together with the upper camshaft bearing housings. The cover also has four air supply channels, mounting holes for the fuel injectors and holes for the PCV elements of the cylinder head cover. The air intake channels connect the air intake manifold to the cylinder head inlet filler ports.
The cylinder head also serves as a mounting location for the following components:
- Front engine mount
- Front and rear engine lifting eyes
- Intake and exhaust manifolds
- EGR valve and heat exchanger
- Fuel filter support bracket
- Temperature control module
- Vacuum pump and high pressure fuel pump
