Replacing the cylinder head gasket (Discovery 1)

1. Drain the coolant

2. Remove the intake manifold (see chapter "Fuel system").

3. Remove the generator.

4. Remove the air conditioning compressor (if equipped).

5. Remove the rocker arm axles.

6. Remove the push rods.

7. Remove the exhaust manifold.

8. Remove the air filter.

9. Remove the air flow sensor.

10. Remove the ground wires (at the back of the left head).

11. Remove the crankcase ventilation hose (on the right head).

12. Loosen the head mounting bolts in the reverse order of tightening, see figure.

13. Remove the cylinder head.

14. Remove the head gasket.

15. Clean all mating surfaces.

16. Place the gasket on the block with the TOP mark facing up (do not use sealant).

17. Clean the bolt threads and lightly lubricate them with engine oil.

18. Place the head on the block along the guide pins.

19. Install the head bolts: 96 mm long - positions 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10; 66 mm long - positions 1, 3 and 5.

20. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to a torque of 20 Nm and then tighten them a further 180°.

21. Reinstall the removed parts (item 11-1).
