Cruise control system drive (Tdi) (Discovery 1)

Note: the drive is not repairable. If the drive is damaged, install a new unit.


1. Disconnect the battery.

1. Disconnect the battery.


2. Remove the cotter pin and the pin securing the cable to the lever.

3. Disconnect the ball end of the drive rod

4. Disconnect the vacuum hose.

5. Unscrew the drive mounting nut and remove the drive.

6. Check the drive diaphragm, replace the unit if necessary.

7. Measure distance A, see figure. If distance A is 16 mm, proceed to step 9.

8. If not:
  • place a mark on the tie rod spacer at a distance of 16 mm
  • install the rod and the retainer according to the mark, turn the retainer half a turn to pre-secure the rod
  • measure distance A. If everything is normal, turn the lock a quarter turn until it clicks into place.

9. Install the drive on the bracket and tighten the mounting nut.



10. Connect the vacuum hose.

11. Connect the drive rod to the lever.

12. Connect the cable to the lever and secure the pin with a new cotter pin.

13. Adjust the cable so that there are no gaps or sagging in the drive and dimension B becomes equal to 103 mm.
