Brake disk
Pos. | spare part no | Name |
A | - | Rear brake disc - i6 petrol vehicle |
B | - | Rear brake disc - TD4 diesel vehicle |
The ventilated brake disc measures 302 x 20 mm. It is installed on cars with a 3.2-liter i6 gasoline engine. The one-piece brake disc measures 302 x 12 mm. It is installed on vehicles with a 2.2-liter TD4 diesel engine. The brake disc is fixed to the wheel knuckle hub with one screw and is also held by five wheel nuts.
The rear brake discs of both sizes are sufficiently cooled and have high thermal stability even under heavy braking.
The monolithic brake disc is cooled as the vehicle moves forward by air flowing around the disc surfaces. A conventional ventilated disc is cooled when air is sucked in through the radial holes on the outer rim of the disc as the vehicle moves forward. The air cools the disk by moving inward from the edge towards the center of the disk and then out through holes around the central cone of the disk.
The parking brake elements are also located in the brake disc. The inner diameter of the brake disc is 185mm (7.28 inches) and machined, with a smooth surface forming the brake drum. The integrated brake shield and brake dust shield are mounted behind the brake disc. The brake shield contains the brake disc, and also serves as a place to install 2 parking brake pads and working elements.
Through a hole in the dust shield and brake shield, the parking brake cable passes to the inside of the brake disc and connects to the parking brake extension. A hole provided in the outer brake disc hub provides access to the manual parking brake adjuster. For more information, see chapter: Parking brake (206-05 Parking brake and parking brake actuator, Description and function).
Caliper assembly
Pos. | spare part no | Name |
A | - | Rear brake caliper - i6 petrol vehicle |
B | - | Rear brake caliper - TD4 diesel vehicle |
The caliper assembly includes a fixed support bracket and a floating caliper. The fixed support bracket is mounted to wrap around the brake disc. The bracket is attached with two bolts to the steering knuckle. The fixed support bracket serves to accommodate two brake pads that are mounted on both sides of the brake disc.
The bracket has guide channels that allow the brake pads to move in the direction of the disc.
NOTE: The two bolts in the fixed support bracket are pre-applied with a thread locking compound that should not be used for service. Use new fixed support bracket bolts, "old" bolts should be discarded.
A floating caliper is installed above the fixed support bracket, inside which two brake pads are held. The floating caliper is mounted on a fixed support bracket with two bolts with bushings. It forms a hydraulic chamber that contains a piston diameter and an O-ring.
The floating caliper is connected by a flexible hose to the hydraulic brake system. It has a service air bleed screw.
The two bushed bolts are machined to a quality finish and protected from dirt and moisture by a deformable rubber boot. Bushed bolts allow limited lateral movement of the floating calipers along the fixed support bracket.
A shim is installed on the outer edge of each brake pad and enhances NVH performance (noise, vibration and harshness) brake elements during system operation.
Between the fixed support bracket and the floating caliper, the upper and lower fixing springs of the brake pads are installed. The detent springs are held by two bushing bolts and retain force on the brake pads to prevent the pads from moving radially away from the brake disc. Brake pads are not equipped with pad wear sensors.
Dust guard brake
The brake dust shield and integral parking brake shield are located between the wheel knuckle and the brake disc and are attached to the knuckle with four screws.
The brake dust shield faces the appropriate side of the vehicle and protects the brake elements from rock strikes across the axle. The brake dust shield also prevents brake dirt and dust from spreading to other parts of the vehicle.
